The founding of the Interamerican Society of Psychology 60 years ago was celebrated during the XXXIII Interamerican Congress of Psychology held in Medellin, Colombia from the 26th to the 30th of June of 2011.

As part of the commemoration of the 60th aniversary, the 92nd volume of the SIP Newsletter, edited by Vice-Preseident for South America Silvia Publiese (Argentina), was distributed both on paper and via its usual distribtuion online.  As an expression of the effort SIP makes to facilitate interchanges in the different languages of the hemisphere,  this number of the Newsletter was  distributed in brochures in 3 of the 4 official languages of the Society: Spanish, English, and Portuguese.  Sadly, the costs of production did not allow the production in French as well. We appologize for this but feel the decision was justified considering the members whose native language is French understand at least one of the other languages as well. The fact that we accept and produce articles in all 4 languages in our Interamerican Journal of Psychology and that the Society goes to great efforts to use all 4 languages in our congresses attests to the Society’s commitment to the interchange of ideas among all psychologists in the hemisphere.  I do not know of another organization in psychology that has similar projects. These efforts are, never the less, rewarded by the high quality of the inteactions that are established among members of the Society and by the academic-scientific interchages that these efforts  make posible.

One expression of the activities of different directives that span the organization’s 60 years working to make possible the life of the Society, was the invitation of the expresidents of the Society to share their experiences, their historic testimony, evaluations of the present and perspectives for the future of the Soeiety  with the participants in the XXXIII Congress.  To facilitate this, the Society organized a meeting that was entitled Meet the expresidents of the Interamerican Society. This was an open meeting to which all attendees were invited with special invitations to the National Representatives, the Working Groups,  and the current board of directors of the Society.  After the meeting, a simple coctail gathering allowe those involved in discussions and conversations to interact a bit longer.

The expresidents who were present were:

Andrès Consoli (USA), at the time the Past President of the Society

Euclides Sanches (Venezuela)

Isabel Reyes Lagunes (Mexico), Coordinator of the Reunión

Jose Toro-Alfonso (Puerto-Rico), the  President Elect at the time

Maria Regina Maluf (Brasil), the then current President

Michel Sabourin (Canada, as the represntative of  David Belanger)

Rolando Diaz-Loving (Mexico)

Rubén Ardila (Colombia)

Even though they could not attend physiacally, these sent their written greetings:

Aroldo Rodrigues (Brasil)

Arrigo Angelini (Brasil)

Susan Pick (Mexico)

Those with excused absences were:

Barbara Marín (USA)

Bernardo Ferdman (USA)

Gerardo Marín (USA)

Harry Triandis (USA)

Héctor Fernández Alvarez (Argentina)

Wayne Holtzman (USA)

At the end of the get together, we all left convinced even more that the Interamerican Society has a history of struggles, successes, and friendships, built across all the years  around the Psychology in the American Continent.  This history is the basis for new initiatives always tied to the effort to construct a psychology in the service of the well being of all and committed to the social development of our countries.

After the Congress videos of interviews made by the Executive Secretary fo rhte United States and Canada, Carlos Zalaquett were distributed. These videos are available at:
